Antifouling, Epoxy Protection, Anodes, Prop and Shaft
 |
Tired and worn antifouling will cause a build up of Marine growth on your hull and keel which will slow your craft down. Endeavour Yacht Service have the resources to lift and store your craft for the removal and application of antifouling. We will be pleased to apply your own favourite brand of antifouling or supply a solution best suited to your craft from the many brands available. When we organise for your boat to be lifted out of the water we will check the hull / keel / prop shaft / propeller for any anomalies and give you a professional assessment as to the condition of your craft below the waterline without charge. Why not let us inspect, clean or replace your Anodes at the same time. We will also be pleased to clean your Prop shaft and Propeller. |

Osmosis: Investigation, Treatment and Prevention
 |
Osmosis, what is it?
Osmosis is blistering found in areas of the craft that has constant or very regular water coverage. It was believed in the early days of GRP boats that Gelcoat was water proof. This is proven not to be true, it is porous. But this has to be over a prolonged period. The water works its way through the Gelcoat into the GRP finding very small voids; this causes a chemical reaction which builds up pressure under the surface of the Gelcoat.
This is how the blisters form.
At the build of a new boat two Gelcoats are/were applied (some companies now only use one non pigmented Gelcoat below the waterline).
If the Gelcoat over coating times are not adhered the styrene can be trapped between the two coats, this can cause, over time partial separation of the two coats. This does not cause the reaction to happen, but increase the chances of it happening. When the first layer glass fibre is applied to the Gelcoat it must be put down on a good layer of resin, then allowed to soak and then consolidated. If the glass fibre is not put down onto a good layer of resin and dry glass fibre touches the tacky Gelcoat, some of the fibre will not take in the resin. The fibre will then in effect be a straw, just waiting for the moisture to come through the Gelcoat and the straw will suck up the moisture, and then you have a very good base for osmosis. We all know Osmosis is bad news for any Yacht, but forget how stressful it can be for the boat owner. Endeavour yacht services can help to remove that stress.
Prevention
Prevention is the best option on the market. Some modern Boatbuilding companies have very good build procedures in place to prevent Osmosis. The earlier a boat can have preventative coatings applied the better the chances of not ever getting it in the future.
Investigation
First indication is the blistering that can be seen beneath the Antifouling. On popping some random blisters a fluid seeps out, the fluid has a potent odour. From this, moisture reading should be taken to assatain how badly and how far the osmosis has spread.
Treatment
A bad scenario would be to peel the gel coat back to the GRP (Glass Reinforced Plastic).
Sand Blast the surface to break any voids.
The hull will then need to be hot washed or pressure washed until the moisture readings come down into the green zone. In some bad instances E-Glass (a glass fibre woven rovin) will need to be applied with an epoxy resin.
Apply varying epoxy coating.
Apply the antifouling.
Done.
There are many different types of epoxy products that can be used. We use International Paints products. Some customers ask for another product they have heard of, we can look at that as an option. |
